What Is Candle Tunneling?

Candle tunneling occurs when a candle burns straight down the center, leaving unused wax around the edges. This creates a “tunnel” and shortens the life of the candle.

What Causes Candle Tunneling?

1. First Burn Is Too Short

If the candle is extinguished before the wax melts fully across the surface, tunneling is likely to happen.

2. Wick Issues

A wick that is too short, trimmed too aggressively, or poorly centered can prevent the wax from melting evenly.

3. Drafts and Airflow

Burning a candle near open windows, fans, or vents can cause uneven melting.

How to Prevent Candle Tunneling

Let the Wax Melt Edge to Edge

On the first burn, allow the wax to melt completely across the surface. This usually takes 1–3 hours, depending on candle size.

Trim the Wick Properly

Trim the wick to 5 mm (¼ inch) before lighting. This ensures a steady flame without excessive heat.

Avoid Drafts

Place your candle in a still area to promote an even burn.

Can You Fix Candle Tunneling?

Yes.
You can gently melt the surface wax using:

• A longer burn session (within safe limits)

• The foil method (carefully wrapping foil around the rim to trap heat)
