Candle tunneling is one of the most common candle issues—and one of the easiest to avoid. At Lumory Candles, our eco-friendly candles are designed to burn evenly, but proper burning habits are essential for the best experience.
Candle tunneling occurs when a candle burns straight down the center, leaving unused wax around the edges. This creates a “tunnel” and shortens the life of the candle.
If the candle is extinguished before the wax melts fully across the surface, tunneling is likely to happen.
A wick that is too short, trimmed too aggressively, or poorly centered can prevent the wax from melting evenly.
Burning a candle near open windows, fans, or vents can cause uneven melting.
On the first burn, allow the wax to melt completely across the surface. This usually takes 1–3 hours, depending on candle size.
Trim the wick to 5 mm (¼ inch) before lighting. This ensures a steady flame without excessive heat.
Place your candle in a still area to promote an even burn.
Yes.
You can gently melt the surface wax using:
A longer burn session (within safe limits)
A candle warmer
The foil method (carefully wrapping foil around the rim to trap heat)
Every Lumory Candle is made with eco-friendly wax and carefully selected wicks to encourage an even burn. With proper care, your candle will burn beautifully from first light to last.
